Thanks for your bug report and for testing unity, which version of gtk did you 
have before downgrading?
2.20.1-0ubuntu2~menuproxy6 was the latest in the ppa, can you ensure you had 
the crash with that one?
You can try unity without this gtk version, it's only for the appmenu testing 
(menu in the panel).

FYI, with 2.21.1-1ubuntu3 and 2.21.2-0ubuntu1 on maverick, I don't see
that issue.
