I have this problem as well using the i810 driver.
I can preview whatever screensaver I like in full-screen preview mode
without any issue and I can run screensavers from the command line, but
I cannot get it to do anything except fade-to-black either on timeout or
via activate screensaver from

started happening after i enabled aiglx. i'm using edgy, and the new
nvidia drivers. i get /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gears to output, but i'd

Rebooting and reinstalling nvidia drivers fixes issue.

Which version of Ubuntu are you running?
As well, what happens when you run a screensaver from the command prompt
with your nVidia drivers? Does /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gears display
anything but a blank screen?

I'm running edgy, I'll attach the files you've asked for and run gears if it
recurs and let you know. As far as I'm aware this xorg.conf.backup is the one
with the problem, though it stopped working after the problem, hence the
reinstall of the nVidia drivers (which I'm starting to
These two files are the .old ones, but to be honest I'm not sure they
are actually descriptive of the problem, if it recurs I'll let you know
but also file it with nVidia, the more I think about it the more it
seems to be their problem.
