Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

No matter what session I choose I cannot login using gdm. Once I have
entered my username and password the login screen disappears and I just
see the background. A few seconds later I am back at a login prompt w/
no error reported. I have tried all the available sessions (except
"User defined session") and even tried installing xfce4-session, but
haven't been able to login. I install xdm and switched that to the
default login manager. Now I can login, but only when using xdm. I
looked at ~/.xsession-errors but there is no information - literally
just one line, "/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup..."
