I am on Hardy and have a very similar problem. When I press the 'Test' button for sound capture, I have an error window that appears and that do not go away when pressing the close button. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducable with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon.
