window redraw glitches caused by ubuntu patch
metacity 1:2.30.3-0ubuntu8 altered the patch to set the capture-before-
unmap gconf key to false by default. Check if your gconf setting for
this is on, and if turning it off resolves the problem as well as
disabling the patch entirely does.

Unsetting the key fixed the glitches for me:
$ gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/capture_before_unmap --type
bool false
Maybe a future release should attempt to re-set it to be false during
the upgrade process?
