the 'awk' command you added stripped out the first column which has the
installed information, the screenshots confirms it's not happening
with the Ubuntu themes though which is a good indication

What theme,icon theme do you use? I just tried on precise with a guest
session in gnome classic, after adding the systray to the gnome-panel
and starting gnome-sound-applet the icon is listed fine in the systray
