Gedit quicklist was patched by Bilal for 11.10 cycle[1] but was removed later
on by the upstream[2][3].

Thank you for your work on that, the reason it got reverted upstream is
that custom groups should start with a X-, desktop-file-validate
complains if you don't do that

@Barneedhar, ah that's the mistake I made. Sorry but I am new to Ubuntu
development. However you say you are not sure if this will be accepted
upstream. I'll report a bug report in gnome for this. Also since the
user interface is in effect, I am guessing this wont be possible this
cycle?

Well I branched the latest gedit using bzr branch ubuntu:gedit. And in
the folder data, there is the desktop file gedit.desktop.in.in. If you
open that file you will see the unity quicklist support Open new
window.
