I found the cause of the annoyance. For some reason, the virtual
keyboard (Onboard) is automatically set, probably by gnome-accesibility,
to show up when the screen is locked. Launching Onboard Settings and
unchecking "Show Onboard when unlocking the screen" obviously stops this
behavior.

Same problem happening with GNOME Shell 3.2.2.1, when activating Screen
keyboard once through the accessibility menu.
