Is this bug being fixed? Cause I still have it in 2.96 in precise
pangolin. Any ideas what to do in order to not have to restart rhythmbox
every couple of days?

Rhythmbox cummulates memory in precise - probably memory leak

I build latest rhythmbox from quantal reps for precise with patches from
git which fixes memory leaks. You can install it from my ppa

I'm having this issue in precise with both 2.96 and 2.97. For me it only
seems to happen when I use the unity music lense to start playing music.

I am affected with 11.10.
I just discovered that my Rhythmbox used 1.8 GB of memory.
I then killed it and started it again. I notice that skipping to or
playing a new song eats up memory. If I skip to a next song, about 25 MB
of memory are consumed and not properly released anymore. So if I
Sorry, accidentally clicked the post button.
It seems that the memory consumption has something to do with the cover
art plugin, which is enabled.

According to Jonathan Matthew, the current main developer of Rhythmbox,
GNOME git commits '3dec1ff, fc1e8ca, 7ea940f and 7cdf4cd fix even more
leaks'. See gnome bug #677738 for the full list.

It is claimed in the upstream report that a number of recent commits (4
in total since 2.97 so far) fix even more of 'huge leaks.' I would like
to kindly ask you to consider backporting them to Precise. It's very
important to make Rhythmbox, which is the *main* media player, actually
usable in

Since the problem persists in both 2.96 and the recently released 2.97
(that I grabbed from webupd8.org ppa), in order to get more attention to
this bug, I have forwarded this to GNOME's bugzilla.

I don't think the memory leak is related to the GStreamer backend. It
could be related to in-memory album art caching. You should file this
bug directly on bugzilla if you want to get more attention from upstream
devs.

I am experiencing the same problem. I opened up system monitor one day
to find Rhythmbox was using 1.8 GB of RAM. I started pressing the skip
button, and the usage started building up even more, up to 2.3 GB.

Yup.
This is with all plugins and crossfading backend disabled, too. It
*looks like* its caching the song in memory, and never releasing it -
memory usage goes up every time there is a song change, be it natural or
prompted (ff/rewind buttons).
This is completely unusuable; you can *easily*
*hundreds, if not thousands, of --megabytes of -- RAM. Ugh. More
coffee needed.
