I have been seeing the same symptoms. I was at first unable to
reproduce it reliably, but I found that button-mashing (like repeating
the home keys: asdf;lkj) while in unicode-input mode (scim) would
crash it quickly. Actually, it doesn't crash, it just locks up. I have
to then kill it manually

In Gutsy (amd64 version) the latest ekiga version (2.0.9) is included in the
repository. However, one of the required libraries is broken. The error
message is as follows:
$ ekiga
ekiga: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libopal.so.2.2: undefined
What theme do you use? Does it happen every time? Does you have gtk-qt-
engine installed?
