After some trials and errors, I found the culprit. The is only ONE
package missing to open the session normally :
gsettings-ubuntu-schemas
So the conclusion is : if it is needed to properly open an X session
then it SHOULD be a true dependency from another package, not just a
recommended

... a true ubuntu-desktop dependancy, not a recommended one.
I did not tested, but it could be the same for some of the other
*-desktop flavors.

I have the same problem - at least the same symptoms as the OP when playing MP4
viedos with totem on wayland.
My video card is an ATI HD5850 using the radeon driver.
The video will play in totem on xorg. It will also play on wayland with mpv or
vlc.

I used my laptop at work, where I have a docking station with USB
ethernet included (interface enx0050b6cf4d4a). The dhcp on the wired
ethernet includes my work domain, purestorage.com. I undocked,

I do not want to add any further patches to Debian's screen package
which makes it differ from upstream behaviour more than it already does.
(Of course, it's a different thing if issues are caused by existing
patches.)

In ubuntu 17.10 i am not able to activate numlock on the login screen.
Tried with and without wayland. Cannot get numlockx working as I always
did in other *ubuntu's with gdm.
/etc/gdm3/Init/Default is not working anymore.
is there a way to do it?

Hi Jeremy,
I converted file-roller patch from 2 to 1. See my above comment for
details.
Now, it will use titlebar only under Unity. All other sessions will use
headerbar including pantheon.
