The gdm greeter runs its own instance of gnome-shell running in a
special gdm mode.
The lock screen is drawn by the current gnome-shell session and thus

Just after installation of Ubuntu 18.04 I entered in a Terminal "apt-get
source gimp". Then I changed to "gimp-2.8.22" and tried to build GIMP
with "dpkg-buildpackage -b -us -uc". I installed all dependents. At the
end of the build some tests are performed automatically. Some
I also had this problem with AMD64 & Nvidia Geforce, but it doesn't actually
freeze the system, you just can't get out of the screen lock.
I solved it by un-checking the option to show notifications on the lock screen
- no problems since then.

synaptics package manager (same issue)
Login with phone number and enter access code. Works for 5 minutes, then
when switch back from other application, met with original install "Get

When the Files Nightly Flatpak is updated (at the moment it's a 3.28.0

Those XKB options are probably set by the keyboard-configuration.config
