the others that have had this problem are also using a Radeon. This bug

And this is not a bug in GDM, it's a bug in the XOrg package, because if
you (blindly) login graphically despite that garbled display, Gnome is
still garbled. It's definitely XOrg.

If you are using the driver that was installed during the Ubuntu installation,
you are using the open source driver.
It's looking like this isn't a problem with X, but rather a problem with the

Correction, this is not a problem with the radeon driver. I tried the open
source driver ati and got the same problem.
So it must not be the driver at all, but something with XOrg's initial drawing.

probably had corrupted files somehow.

I can confirm that similar crash happened in Lucid. It happened only

Short on ideas, but here is an interesting fact.
When logging into my account for the first time, this error popped up. After
reporting it, I went back and added another Indicator Applet (just outside of
Notification Area 2.28.0, the one with the Volume and UbuntuOne applets) to my
top panel.
Tony, I am sure you meant to help us somehow. Any ideas about this
issue?
Zeniff, just like in your case the applet crashed between logging in for
the very first time and before I was able to run any programmes. My
guess gnome panel 2.28 has some unresolved compatibility issues. Keep in
mind that
Just got to say, I had this problem with Lubuntu - and it seems to be
solved if you wrap the usb cable around some ferrite - there may be
interference when a usb hard drive or other high emi device is plugged
in or activated that sends the hub into a state of panic. Might be worth
a shot
I triggered this crash from F-Spot-Help -- I did not click on any
contents of the help, simply opened the help.

While this bug doesn't affect solving the Sudoku puzzle, it leaves a bad

his/her initial trial of Ubuntu. After all, timing how long it took you
