By default it is checked, that 's what's causing apps to be set as the default
folder handler.
Unchecking it doesn't prevent the app from being added to the 'Open With' menu

The bug seems to be basically about being able to log into a wayland session
while using nvidia drivers. Though the description has changed a time or two.

this is just temporary, opening a new window causes it to start up
