this problem with default new-user settings, but I think that's because
I'm using a fairly-high display resolution: 1152x864. Looks to me like

Oops, sorry, that might have been a red herring. That third assertion
is printed as soon as I click on the Ubuntu logo to drop down the main

I have this exact same problem (using Ubuntu Dapper, up to date via online
repositories). I tried creating a new test user, and logging in as that
user, so that the default Ubuntu desktop settings would be applied. But the
problem still exists for that user.

This is really irritating. As a workaround, I've removed the gnome-
screensaver package, in the hope that'll prevent the screensaver ever
kicking in.
My problem is, I want to play full-screen OpenGL games, possibly for
longer than 1 hour at a time :) I can't trust that the game will
