Booting up with the 'splash' parameter removed, so that usplash does not run, does not fix the problem. Removing the rc2.d file so gdm does not start at bootup, and then starting it from a text console after the machine comes up does fix it. If I change the script to just run X directly rather

This is a regression from gutsy. I get the same error when right clicking and then choosing Preferences from the menu. Apparently this window is reached by running gnome-keyboard-properties --a11y. So it seems like you either need a shell script under the old name or to update the applet, etc.
