By chance do you have an Nvidia graphics card. My test machine was
doing the same thing. gnome-system-monitor using high 90% switching to
resources tab would spike it to 100%. I did not have the nvidia drivers
enabled. Once I enabled them and rebooted my system has stabilized.
Running sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg in terminal fixed this
issue for me

The error I have posted in this ticket seems to either give the program a valid
exit or not be a 'severe' enough instance to generate a crash / report.
(So maybe 'crash' was a bad word).
After the event of dropping a music item on my ipod (see

Everything works now though (I had transfered music to it using Winamp
at home).
Perhaps this bug is only a problem adding music to brand-new Ipod's?
It can't properly initialize a music folder or something similar perhaps?

After reading a misconfigured loopback comment above, I checked my
network interface settings, and sure enough, I had configured a static
IP address for my ethernet interface and the slow startup would happen
only when I didn't have the ethernet
