This might actually be a duplicate of bug# 1385292. That bug documents
IBus as the cause of this behavior, and shows how to workaround the
problem by disabling IBus for keyboard input: System Settings -
Language Support - Keyboard input method system: none

Yes but that's a bad workaround. Hope someone can nail down the bug and
fix it soon.
Otherwise I'll be forced to switch the OS. Renaming files from a file
manager is a very basic fundamental operation that should go smoothly.
