Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce
1. Open the file manager 2. Right click -> Open in Terminal 3. In the terminal type "echo $USER", then press enter. The user name is printed in the line below. 5. Right click in the terminal, select New Tab. 6. In the terminal type "echo $USER", then press enter. An empty line is printed. Expected result: in step 6 the user name should be printed. There are many other environment variables affected. As a result many programs can't be executed or don't behave properly in the second tab. When the terminal is launched from the dash, new tabs work as expected. Only terminals launched from nautilus are affected. I tried to file this against nautilus-extension-gnome-terminal but launchpad tells me the package does not exist.
