[Bug 2152847] Re: Focus follows mouse: Focus-mode "sloppy" seems to be broken in Ubuntu 26.04

2026-10-10 Thread Seth
@pbui I confirm this is still not working as intended. I also use the
"Tiling Assistant" (not realizing that's apparently considered not-
default?).

@eleasto I consider this bug to be 100% the same, because it's just
another keyboard window-management command (just this time not with the
intent to switch windows, but rather to move it). The same principle
applies: keyboard commands should *not* re-evaluate sloppy mouse focus.
That's the whole point of this bug.

However, I'm not averse to tracking the remaining issue in a separate
bug because

 (a) the largest issue HAS been fixed (wrong focus on keyboard window switch)
 (b) the remaining bug CAN be described more specifically (focus lost on
keyboard _move_)

Peter, thank you for testing.

Tiling-Assistant was not mentioned before in this bug.
Let's track the issue you're reporting in a separate bug report, seeing as this
bug according to its Test Plan has actually been resolved in version
50.1-0ubuntu2.5. /
Please do open a new bug report and we'll take a look.

[Bug 2152847] Re: Focus follows mouse: Focus-mode "sloppy" seems to be broken in Ubuntu 26.04

2026-10-10 Thread Peter Bui
Unfortunately, this does not fix the issue for me (at least when using
Tiling Assistant).

After enabling -proposed and using the command recommended in #10, I
rebooted and enabled sloppy focus.

## How to demonstrate issue

1. Open two terminals (or any applications)

2. Use the Tiling Assistant shortcuts to snap both windows to the left
(or right) edge (so they are overlapping or on top of each other).

3. Hover mouse over both windows.

4. Use the Tiling Assistant shortcut to snap the focused window to the
other side (ie. left to right)

5. Even though the mouse did not move, the window underneath will get
focus rather than the previous window keeping focus.

In 24.04, the focus would remain with the top window, which was nice as
you could keep using the Tiling Assistant shortcuts to move windows
around. Now, as soon as you move the focused window to the side, it
will lose focus... which is very jarring.

[Bug 2152847] Re: Focus follows mouse: Focus-mode "sloppy" seems to be broken in Ubuntu 26.04

2026-10-08 Thread Seth
I can confirm the 50.1-0ubuntu2.5 version fixes the issues for me. 🎉

## How to test-upgrade

Note for others testing this, I had to manually force-upgrade multiple
packages:

```
sudo apt install {libmutter-18-0,mutter,gir1.2-mutter-18}=50.1-0ubuntu2.5
```

If you install only mutter/libmutter you will end up removing `gdm3`
among others, breaking your entire system.

With the above command line no adverse effects happened on my system.

## Relevant config

The wm.preferences related to this issue:

```
$ gsettings list-recursively  org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences | grep -Ei
'focus|raise'
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise false
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise-delay 500
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode 'sloppy'
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-new-windows 'smart'
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences raise-on-click true
```

## What I've tested

I've tested the expected behavior having multiple windows that accept
keyboard input (signal-desktop, terminal (ptyxis), firefox),

 1. starting keyboard input in Signal (by left-mouse click on the message input
box),
 2. halfway, switch to the terminal **using keyboard only** (Alt-Tab),
performing input in that window, focus correctly stays in terminal, while
mouse-cursor is untouched above the Signal window
 3. touching/moving the mouse *minimally* (still above the Signal window)
correctly refocuses the Signal window for input (without raising)

Several more complicated iterations including using keyboard to switch
back focus and focusing a background window overlapped by another
window, all seemed to be fine as it used to work in Ubuntu 24.04LTS

[Bug 2152847] Re: Focus follows mouse: Focus-mode "sloppy" seems to be broken in Ubuntu 26.04

2026-10-08 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Hello Ingo, or anyone else affected,

Accepted mutter into resolute-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/50.1-0ubuntu2.5 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
resolute to verification-done-resolute. If it does not fix the bug for
you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed-resolute. In either case, without details of your
testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

I also want to know like @justindonnelly prompts: when will LTS be
fixed? It is currently simply broken, with the fix existing for about 5
months.

I am currently using KDE as a crutch, but many people will not have the
option, let alone want to suffer the inconvenience.

[Bug 2152847] Re: Focus follows mouse: Focus-mode "sloppy" seems to be broken in Ubuntu 26.04

2026-09-23 Thread Alessandro Astone
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
  Focus follows mouse: Focus-mode "sloppy" seems to be broken in Ubuntu
  26.04

  ```bash
  gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode
  # "sloppy"
  ```

  I have been using the "Focus on Hover" option without any problems on
  Ubuntu 25.10 on my laptop, but after the update to Ubuntu 26.04 the
  behaviour is broken, as the focus is always given to the window that the
  mouse cursor is over, even when the mouse cursor does not move. This
  prevents from switching windows via Alt+Tab:

  * Two windows side-by-side
  * Mouse cursor in the right window, working in the right window: works as
expected
  * Press Alt+Tab: The focus switches to the left window (as expected), but
even when I don't move the mouse cursor, the focus jumps back to the right
window (where the mosue cursor is) within about half a second. This is
unexpected and makes this feature unusable, unfortunately.

  The behaviour is more clearly visible if "Raise on Focus" is activated
  and the windows overlap slightly. If needed I could submit a screen
  recording of the behaviour.

  A similar bug was reported and fixed in the past:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1969602

  I am using Ubuntu 26.04, all packages are up to date at the time of
  writing. The behaviour still appears when I disable all GNOME
  extensions.

  Related package versions:
  ```
  libmutter-18-0/resolute,now 50.1-0ubuntu2 amd64 [installed,automatic]
  mutter-common-bin/resolute,now 50.1-0ubuntu2 amd64 [installed,automatic]
  mutter-common/resolute,now 50.1-0ubuntu2 all [installed,automatic]
  ```

- I really love this feature and I am so glad that GNOME Tweaks implements
- it. I hope that the behaviour can be fixed and returned to what it was
- before.
+ [ Test Plan ]

- Also, that the bug appears in `mutter` is just my suspicion. If I was
- wrong, please point me in the correct direction to re-submit the bug :)
+ 1. On a Wayland session, enable focus follows mouse:
+gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode 'sloppy'
+ 2. Open two windows, both visible (easiest with two monitors, one window on
each).
+ 3. Place the mouse pointer over window A and leave it there.
+ 4. Without moving the mouse, press Alt-Tab to switch to window B.
+ 5. Verify that window B has keyboard focus
+ 6. Verify that window B keeps window focus as long as the mouse is not moved
+ 7. Move the mouse within window A (over 50px, a threshold that exists to avoid
+accidental focus switch)
+ 8. Verify that the keyboard focus is switched back to window A

- ```bash
- lsb_release -rd
- # Description:Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
- # Release:26.04
+ [ Where problems could occur ]

- apt-cache policy mutter-common
- # mutter-common:
- #   Installed: 50.1-0ubuntu2
- #   Candidate: 50.1-0ubuntu2
- #   Version table:
- #  *** 50.1-0ubuntu2 500
- # 500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu resolute/main amd64 Packages
- # 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
- ```
+ The change is confined to sloppy/mouse focus-mode handling in
+ src/core/display.c and src/core/window.c (tracking the window under the
+ pointer and only letting it take focus on real pointer motion). Users of the
+ default 'click' focus mode are unaffected. A regression would most likely
+ show up as incorrect focus behaviour for focus-follows-mouse users, e.g.
+ hover focus not triggering after keyboard switching.

It looks like upstream has merged a fix into Mutter 50.2 here
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/5036/ (2 months
ago)

I have not been able to verify that that fix actually fixes the issue on
my Resolute box due to technical issues around building the package. I
also don't know how to substitute a libmutter built manually with the
official one in a working manner for a local test.

** Description changed:

-
- Focus follows mouse: Focus-mode "sloppy" seems to be broken in Ubuntu 26.10
+ Focus follows mouse: Focus-mode "sloppy" seems to be broken in Ubuntu
+ 26.04

  ```bash
  gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode
  # "sloppy"
  ```

  * Two windows side-by-side

  ```
  libmutter-18-0/resolute,now 50.1-0ubuntu2 amd64 [installed,automatic]
  mutter-common-bin/resolute,now 50.1-0ubuntu2 amd64 [installed,automatic]
  mutter-common/resolute,now 50.1-0ubuntu2 all [installed,automatic]
  ```

  I really love this feature and I am so glad that GNOME Tweaks implements
  it. I hope that the behaviour can be fixed and returned to what it was
  before.

  ```bash
  lsb_release -rd
  # Description:Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  # Release:26.04
  apt-cache policy mutter-common
  # mutter-common:
  #   Installed: 50.1-0ubuntu2
  #  *** 50.1-0ubuntu2 500
