Yes, bug 491786 is a different problem: The umlauts and special characters (in a word of any field, e.g. name, address, ...) were not imported (addresses, notes, calender items), but replaced by a ?-character, e.g. schön -- sch?n, Baños -- Ba?os. Please change the importance to high than this is really a problem if you want to move to Ubuntu fully (as I would like to). I understand your reasoning. But if Ubuntu wants to attract people, the first steps must work, be as easy and not painful. If there are some glitches afterwards, it is not so important (I think). I am still using Ubuntu and am happy with the performance.
