It turned out this has everything to do with indicator applet vs. notification area duality in Lucid. So the way to see the bug is: 1) Remove indicator applet from gnome-panel 2) Add notification area to gnome-panel (only if it's not already there) gnome-typing-monitor shows the correct icon in indicator and fails to in notification area. I get the same symptoms. I've tried switching themes, switching icon theme, and I've tried using gnome-shell. 1. No, during guest session the icon for gnome-type-monitor looks fine. Also, everything looks very different with black window decorations and such. Switching my main session to Ambience theme didn't help. 2. No, I have yet to face such a problem with any other icon. 3. .xsession-errors has a lot of messages.
