Following Dokuro's suggestion in #16 certainly helped. However, there are still a LOT of screen weirdness issues. For example, it will draw normally upon launch. However, moving the window to a new position will cause the window to go mostly blank again. Starting a game will redraw it, but while the game is running, accessing the menu items will do weird things, with some menu items spontaneously disappearing. I have not seen any other app act this badly. Shared memory was already enable so this can not be the cause In 11.04 the window is no longer empty but just gives a white flash when a new block is loaded. Perhaps it's; but I can't test it since no hardware acceleration is supported by free drivers with my graphic processor, so I can't enable Compiz in this case. This is an issue with AMD-ATI's proprietary drivers. Switching to the open source radeon drivers fixed it for me.
