the _NET_WM_CM_S%d selection. At least in my testing
doing --replace seems to work fine on my system, but this user was
running Arch Linux which I don't run, so I'm wondering if that was a
bug in the old version or a newer version to the one in Ubuntu.

is that other
composite window managers need to fork / rewrite the code in order
that users don't lose functionality when they want to use their window
manager with GNOME.
Such a design would be easy to implement in compiz via it's plugin system.
