Hmm after a reboot, the problem appears to have gone away. My selected
h/w profile is Analogue Stereo Output + Analogue Mono Input (which has
not changed).
There are a couple of extra odd things going on here:

Indeed, I agree with you. However, it seems there is no easy way to get
that list of bookmarks sorted as you say here (we don't have the
information in the same order and I don't want to rely on a nautilus

No, there was no disk in the drive.
The system's been updated 2 times since then with default updates that pop up
from time to time. Today this doesn't happen. I'll monitor this one for few
days and report back.
