I haven't noticed this before. I'm using nVidia drivers, and the display
utility reports the screen as a laptop for me as well, before and after
the gnome-desktop3 (3.4.2-0ubuntu0.1) update.
I've attached a screenshot and here's a link to the LED monitor I'm

Workaround: launch gnome-tweak-tool, turn off 'Have file manager handle
the desktop', desktop is fine. Interestingly, turning that option back
on doesn't break it again (until you unplug/re-plug the VGA cable).

- It persists in Precise as well. Generally the common denominator in both
my machines (running Oneiric and Precise) is NVidia video card with
proprietary drivers.
- I'm not sure, anymore, that Firefox is

Seems it was a random issue. After a further reboot, the problem came up again.
On another machine with two seats the problem disapears reliabally when I add
minimum-vt=10 to /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. But this workarround does not
work on the other machine...

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate a useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:
libshout3 version
As far as I can tell, ( I've never used transmageddon before), the
new package in 12.10 is broken will not transcode anything.
