I am pretty sure that a couple of years ago the gnome guys decided that the
laptop should not suspend if an external monitor is plugged in (which was a
change to the previous strategy). I think that by popular request this was
reverted back to suspend (possibly only in Ubuntu, I don't know).
For clarity I am not actually using a dock, I just have the external
monitor plugged in to the laptop, and it does not suspend when I close

Title:
Aaron Honeycutt, sierdzio - this is differnt bug, you need nomodeset option
in kernel options.
As a workaround in grub press e and add nomodeset in the line when splash
is. Then hit F10 to boot - should work.
You can add this option in /etc/default/grub to make it default.

In that case I don't think that an additional keyboard layout is the way
to go.
I have the same issue in gnome-flashback on ubuntu 14.04. I will try to
create the crash report and attach it.

Oh wait -- you are saying that the external monitor does not receive a
signal at any point in time? I thought the external monitor would stop
working *during/after* running dist-upgrade, and start working again
after a reboot.
That sounds like a kernel/video driver/X.org regression then,
