FWIW, I'm on archlinux but experience the same issue (and I did so back
when I used ubuntu).
I thought I'd share that I could fix the crackling noise by disabling
realtime scheduling. Here's my daemon.conf which produces fine sound:
$ cat ~/.config/pulse/daemon.conf
default-sample-rate = 48000

I have the same problem after a fresh installation of Ubuntu 14.04.3
LTS. My laptop is Thinkpad W530, the graphics card is Nvidia K1000. I
use two monitors and the the screen freezes from time to time when I
running Chrome. I can move the mouse, but everything else freezes.
Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not

in Ubuntu 14.04 amd64. I think it has something to do with VCL and GTK+3
integration. I have galaxy installed too.
I can see all icons in human and sifr themes now.

I often experience this problem with 15.04 and now with 15.10 too.
When I open the lid of the laptop, it wakes up from suspend, and it
should show me the (un)lock screen -- according to my settings. But it
shows my desktop with all open windows for a moment before showing lock
screen.

This problem still occurs in Epiphany 3.18 on Ubuntu 16.04. The above
patch works there too.
In my opinion this patch makes Epiphany a lot nicer to use - I think
Ubuntu should adopt it.

I found this bug after trying to swap to GDM on ubuntu 15.10. I have overcome
it thanks to people working through this.
It seems that whatever the `ubuntu-gnome-default-settings` package does seems
to help also un-comment-ing `WaylandEnable=false` in /etc/gdm/custom.conf is
what needs to be

and it worked. You can use wicd-kde instead wicd-gtk; but, besides that,
you must follow the instructions. Wicd doesn't recognizes automatically
the encryption, so you must try the most common:
