You are right. It looks like a problem with the ActivKey device.
I don't see what change could have created this regression.
First, do not use virtual machine. They often make the things more complex to
debug.
Second, try to re-install a previous version of Ubuntu to check it was working
fine.
Thank you kindly. I was able to ssh into the machine and prepare a crash
report from the gnome-shell process, I will upload that shortly, perhaps
as a separate bug report. However, the real culprit might be located in
the dmesg:

I've noticed that when the computer is idle, it tries to lock the
screen, but a few seconds later, it returns to the desktop.
There seems to be some process that prevents the screen lock when it
occurs.

There still one problem.
When I plug in the headphones (with 3 pins no-mic or 4 pins with mic) it
switches the Input to "Microphone (plugged-in)" and strangely enough
there is no sound at all on the headphones.
If I change the microphone setting to anything "Internal Microphone

Something in 5.4.0-31 which is the latest upgrade for Ubuntu 20.04,

to 5.4.0-29 but excluding 5.4.0-31, sound and mic work
