Firstly, in case this is bug 1976204, please ensure you have
gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-ng
version 43-2ubuntu1 or later. Disabling the Desktop Icons NG extension is also
a workaround.
If the problem still occurs after that then it might also be bug

I agree the time between the spinner vanishing and the live session
starting is too long. Though I've never seen the spinner come back... or
do you mean the mouse cursor appearing in the bottom right quadrant of
the screen?

Open "Text Editor", right click on the app icon on desktop app tray
using the context menu doesn't work at all. Scroll the mouse to "Add to
favourites" but the mouse clicks ends up triggering the menu item above
that original intended action. This sucks!
