over the menu bar at the top of the screen.
It cannot be accessed using the keyboard. Alt+F doesn't work (the well-

Following the link to the gnome bugzilla -- I ran across a tolerable
workaround for the moment: If G_SLICE=always-malloc is in the
environment, then it will start. It still complains, but it starts and
appears to work (so far).
This makes it consume more CPU (and Lord knows it already consumes
Thunderbird doesn't start AT ALL in kubuntu 13.04. because of this bug.

Open rhythmbox and play some media.
Get on with work
Stop working, and choose to close the media player.
As Rhythmbox is no longer the focussed app whilst working, right click the
Rhythmbox icon and choose Quit from the quicklist.
Note that the audio carries on playing.
