Just installed a fresh install of 14.10 two days ago and I am experiencing exactly the same thing as user pguth is describing as well. I really don't have anything else installed, except for the nVidia graphics drivers, chrome, and steam.

I noticed this since I've installed Ubuntu 9.04. I was poking in the fonts setting under the appearance preferences and I thought I noticed a slight difference if I turn off all processing and make the font glyph render without subpixel rendering and hinting. However it is merely marginal. To make sure it was not the graphics drivers I switched from the ati drivers to vesa but that did not help at all.
