Being completely honest, this is unlikely to ever become an option in
the main Thunderbird code. The UI is moving towards more different
kinds of tabs, not fewer.
Fortunately, all the hooks should be there for an extension to offer
this. If someone wants to develop that extension, and finds

This seems like reasonable behaviour to me. I agree with Magnus that
I'ld prefer it to end in -1, -2, etc… (Sorry, Ulf. :)
(As a side note, OS X, when you delete the same thing twice, names the
second filename.txt as filename 14:59:27 .txt
