Not sure it is the Nvidia driver, I have had the same problem on both the
Nvidia-390 and the X-org Nouveau display driver.
There seems to be a lot of talk about error occurring with incorrect password
input, this is inconsistent with my experience.
The best workaround I have seen so far
Still exists in an up-to date 13.04

Has any-one tried installing the driver from a different source to the
additional drivers tab in software sources
I eventually in frustration installed fglrx-updates, fglrx-amdcccle-updates and
fglrx-updates-dev via synaptic package manager and it now works.
I have also seen some-one else say
@pubudu I concur with you, I have also tried this and it did not work.
