Mmmm, gents, I was looking at the last screenshot of my output
settings and had a hunch. I decided to move the output volume to about
75% and still had no sound. I moved it to about 80% and still no sound.
I moved it to 100% and bingo, there was sound! Why would there be no
sound at levels l
Raymond, is there something I need to do from all you have posted?

Dave: Re posts #s 8 and 9, thank you. I found five of the "required-
any" lines and commented out all five and did as you indicated in post
#9 (I even rebooted the laptop) but still no sound. I have attached a
screenprint of my sound output.

My sound settings for output is showing Digital Output (S/PDIF) while I
am thinking this should be (Speaker) however, there is nowhere to change
it. The Alsa mixer confirms S/PDIF zero audio levels and this cannot be
changed.
