I appear to have fixed the problem with this:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install hunspell-en-gb

Featherpad is still telling me that I need to install a Hunspell
dictionary when I try to spell check. It gives instructions that I
expect are for KDE.
