This morning, it did automatically return itself to the right settings
(after I'd logged in). That's after a boot and shutdown (when I worked
at home on Friday) where it was just the laptop screen.

This happens to me with Banshee in 11.10. The first time I press the
play button, Banshee starts but doesn't start playing. The second time,
Banshee starts and starts playing.
