On my Lenovo E530, disabling the handling of logind worked with Xubuntu 13.10.
It does not work with Xubuntu 14.04

Also affects Lenovo E530 upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04.
Disabling systemd management of lid does not help.
Workaround is to disable, in the power manager, the handling of lid closing and
suspending manually (top right menu).
