Same problem after an upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10 via "do-release-
upgrade". However in my case the issue occurred not for a Wired
connection, but for a Mobile Broadband connection (device ttyUSB2 of
type gsm over interface ppp0). Comment 7 fixed the issue.

I have the same problem, using a Huawei E173 under Ubuntu 15.10.
I confirm that connections remain editable before reboot, when created
through nm-applet. This works both for those created using 'Edit
Connections' as for those created using the "New Mobile Broadband

I'm running Ubuntu 15.10 with network-manager 1.0.4-0ubuntu5.2.
Regularly (if not always) the nm-applet icon is not showing in the Unity
panel after logon. Syslog shows these error messages:

Just made a clean 64bit install from alternate (for RAID and LVM) same
problem.
Solved by
sudo apt-get remove lightdm
sudo apt-get install gdm
reboot in recovery mode
add myself to sudo group (/etc/group and /etc/gshadow)
reboot normally
sudo apt-get install lightdm
sudo apt-get
