The only viable option is then to force quit firefox and restart it
later, and close the tab containing the https://elements.polymer-
project.org/guides/flex-layout url.


My guess it that it has to do with shadowDom polyfill from polymer.
Implementing the shadow dom in firefox would probably be the right thing to do.

  When I open specifically https://elements.polymer-project.org/ and
  https://elements.polymer-project.org/guides/flex-layout, Firefox keeps
  on eating memory until system hangs. I have 8 GB RAM  firefox eats
  upto 60% RAM with no other tabs opened. (Firefox has crashed several
  times and I restored session only opening these pages).
