In my situation (and old GeForce Go 6400), with a fresh install of ubuntu 14.04
(some weeks ago all worked ok):
1) with nouveau drivers I can login but using dash hangs X (strange visual
effects)
2) switching to nvidia makes screen blank at login
I only solved switching to gnome from unity.

always happens when I launch virtualbox (downloaded from virtualbox site

Nautilus seems to ignore hidden file (files with a dot before the name) size in
contents: field inside Basic tab of directory properties.
You can simply test this by creating, for example, 1gb file inside a directory
and re-naming with a . (dot) in front of its name. Then
