I'm experiencing this issue in a Starbucks cafee here in China.

On intel sandy bridge the link workaround `sudo ln -s libvdpau_va_gl.so.1
libvdpau_i965.so.1` is breaking VLC:
- the video starts but after a while VLC hangs

I'm on Ubuntu 12.10 using SNA.
Tear is still present on video playback (mainly with VLC) with
compositor enabled or disabled. (va-api enabled/disabled no changes as
well)
this is my xorg.conf video options:
Option AccelMethod sna
Option SwapbuffersWait
Same Issue here in 12.10:
i have created a pptp VPN connection, I can connect but after a minute
or two it freeze ( ping, svn, navigation all freeze ) and the only way
to re-enable it is to reconnect.
It is very frustrating because I need it to work with svn and I'm not
able to checkout a

I have just checked the `/val/log/syslog` ( see also comment #8 ) and I
have noticed that when the issue start I got this messages:

According with pptpclient documentation the unsupported protocol error
is caused by the MPPC patch to pppd is not compatible with kernel *
MPPE kernel module

Did some test here and I thinks I find out the origin of the issue ( comment
#19 gave me the right hint, about overlay ):
Basically if you:
- disable composite ( sorry till now I cannot find a better solution )
AND
- [VLC] deselect this option: Video - Display - Accelerated video output
Same issue here on 12.10.
I'm using xfce and empathy 3.6 ( old comment say the fix would be ready for
empathy 3 ... ).
I'm not completely sure but I think that this bug is present only if you use
anything that is not Unity ( got the same on e17 ).

- export $(gnome-keyring-daemon -s)
- EMPATHY_PERSIST=1 /usr/lib/empathy/empathy-auth-client
- Try connecting IM accounts
I have same problem on 12.04 using different kernel 3.2/3.4/3.6
The issue is for me visible only in Never Winter Night ( linux native version):
