Switching from Wayland to Xorg in Gnome Session not only solved the session logout problem, but also a more serious one, namely, the computer becoming completely unresponsive after suspend, leaving me with no alternative but to force shut down the computer and restarting. Overall the computer works better on Xorg than on Wayland. I have Ubuntu 17.10 installed on a new Dell Insipiron 15 5000 series laptop.
