At that time the problem went away after playing with various configurations,
but I could not really understand how.

PS: when I plugged the mic in the pink jack, I disabled the Logitech
webcam mic from Volume Control -- Configuration , so I am quite
confident that I was testing only the pink-jack mic, and strangely it
showd the same problem (worked for about 10 seconds and then froze).

Installed fresh xubuntu 12.04. Problem appeared the first time I tried skype:
mic not working.
The computer has a Logitech webcam with integrated mic (wich was working before
, on win XP).
On the Valume Control -- Input Devices I could see the sound bar moving
following
the problem disappeared after unblocking the left-right controls on the
volume control window, but it reappered after a log out and log in again
(it is not a permanent fix)
