This happens not only for USB disks, but also for normal harddisks.
I had my old ubuntu system on /dev/sdb and the disk utility refuses to format
the disk.

I've also thrown Disks away!
This is exasperating. 3 different builds with Ubuntu, 2 64bit 1 32bit
and every single one incapable of simply formatting any kind of flash
pen (or disk!!!). I miss 12.04 so badly! Also, I had to turn to a
Windows system to format erase my flash pens. Pretty
