board and case both support both types. here is the result of trying
every possible combination:
BIOS: AC97 CASE: AC97 HP connected: NO - audio from rear panel
BIOS: AC97 CASE: AC97 HP connected: YES - audio from rear panel and headphone
BIOS: AC97 CASE: HDA HP connected: NO - audio from rear
do you mean the headphone jack control remain true even when the
headphone is unplugged?

did misc bit is set in node 0x1d or unsol event enabled.after you select
using ac97 front audio panel in bios ?
Misc = NO_PRESENCE
you may need to ask in alsa devel mailing list since it is not easy to
debug when there is jack event to power down those unused widget
