Dave, Restoring the original libcario module fixed evince --- now NX is unable to display text again. Not being real familiar with the internals of Linux, It never occurred to me to relate the loss of EVINCE with the fix of NX --- especially since they occurried weeks apart from each other. - -

Dave, additional info My initial ubuntu distro was Ubuntu 8:04 LTS, which was upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, which was upgraded to ubuntu 12.04, and then to 12.10 - - - - To get Gnome 3, I installed "Ubuntu Gnome remix" as outlined here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/ReleaseNotes/12.10
