I also have bug 1167484 opened with the hplip folks. Like I said, I'm
new to Ubuntu and I was not shure whether this was a lplip problem or a
CUPS problem. My suspicion is that it's a probable user error but I've
run out of ideas so I've turned to the experts. Thank you.

I tried your suggestion with poor results. Maybe that's a clue. I attached the
printer to the USB and redirected the cat as you said but the printer did not
detect anything. I tried waking the printer with the power button and tried the
cat again but nothing happened. I removed the
