I added telepathy-gabble because there is still a 50/50 possibility it's
related to that package as well.

Title:
Empathy still receives messages while offline and not running

Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “telepathy-gabble” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I'll be using google chat through my gmail account in the browser and
it doesn't matter how many times i kill telepathy-gabble or empathy-
chat, I will still receive a message on empathy sent to my telepathy-
  gabble account.

I don't think this is specifically telepathy-gabble since I have
killed telepathy-gabble many times and this issue still reoccurs. In
fact I can't find a way to stop receiving messages yet.

  Reproduce:
-Launch empathy, setup (or use) a telepathy gabble account and receive an IM.
  -Quit empathy
  -kill empathy-chat telepathy-gabble in terminal
-receive an IM from a telepathy-gabble contact.
