Thanks to caspar luc's advise my system is now back to normal.
Got the package from here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/gnome/gnome-settings-daemon-schemas
and installed it using: dpkg --force-overwrite -i
gnome-settings-daemon-schemas_3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11_all.deb

For those who don't have aptitude or ppa-purge, the problem can be solved (in a
dirty way) by downloading the .deb package and installing it through the
command: dpkg --force-overwrite -i package_name.
Removing gnome PPA had no effects for me, because they were already
automatically disabled
This error is produced because before the installation you didn't
removed the gnome ppa along with the packages. This is evident since
those package gnome-settings-daemon 3.10.2-0ubuntu1~saucy6 is not
present in saucy repositories, but in gnome PPA's. You can try removing
one by one using dpkg all
I tried
sudo aptitude install gnome-settings-daemon
and it worked for me.
It uninstalled gnome-compiz and when I executed the same command a second time
everything worked.
Now apt-get upgrade is working again.

I found a workaround. For each ~saucy package which conflicts, invoke:
dpkg -P ...the.package.name...
And the retry the apt-get install which previously failed.

Same issue here. I've tried the aptitude way, which I originally thought
as working... but later on in the install the bug remanifested itself. I
have a root-mode ubuntu trusty in the meantime. It seems the last
package that blocks (in a severe way) the dist-upgrade to trusty.

if you dont have synaptic or aptitude will be very hard to do smth.
I can suggest you to download the .deb package for synaptic or aptitude and to
try to install them manually. maybe it will work.
Or if not you will have two ways: One solution will be to reinstall the system.

You have to uninstall whole unity and the dependent packages who create
the bug. For that open synaptic and uninstall these packages (you will
find them under broken packages section).
and install mate from repositories (I used the ppa from their official

issue, and I got from somwhere this command, and it worked. though unity
interface wasnt the usual one.

I am having the exact same issue. I have tried everything i could imagine, but
it still there. I had to unistall unity because ofthis bug and install and use
mate-desktop.
